Surveying is a science that combines practical mathematics with measurement techniques and drawing art, and by using it, displays some pieces of ground with all its complications on horizontal page.
 In general, mapping knowledge could be called the science of producing & implementing of map. But due to the high extent of this science in the world, this definition can be considered comprehensive.
 Now we have reached a level  that any type of activity in the fields of civil, economic, agriculture, military such as construction of dams, canals, roads, electricity powerhouses, military operations and other fields are in need of mapping science.

Mapping

The main target of mapping is determining of relative position ofpoints at ground level or close to it.
This conclusion could be determining of the coordinates of points in three dimensions. Of course in some cases, to determine the location, dimension of time is considered also (measured astronomical measurements & satellite mapping).
Desirable coordinates could be Cartesian (X,Y,Z) or geographical.
Mapping operations usually consist of two phases: Removal or measurement & calculating and representing the work result. In the measurement phase, tools, devices & different methods are used in order to achieve required data. Different methods are used in the second phase also. The result of work is represented as an analogue (Map, transverse and longitudinal sections and etc.) or digital (tables, earth digital models (DTM or DGM). Selecting appropriate tools & suitable methods depends on region extent, desirable accuracy & provided features.
